I am a final year medical student and my mentor is Tim Smart, Chief Executive of King’s College Hospital.
Our first meeting took place in London in early December, which was both thought provoking and practical. We agreed that given that the career pathway in medicine is relatively set, our discussions would focus on business, leadership and personal development. We talked about the value of studying towards a formal MBA, compared to doing specific courses that would focus on areas most releavent to me.
Tim told me about how the techniques used by those who are most effective at networking, and emphasised the importance of languages. We discussed the different approaches taken by highly successful people and their use of regular reflection to ensure that energy is being focused on specific goals. To go with this, Tim reminded me of the value of holidays.
Finally, we discussed some options for the future, to include workplace shadowing and looking for a position as a trustee for a charity. Tim and I have scheduled to meet in mid-January in Birmingham – I look forward to this!
